But What About Socialization?

For part of 2025, I have decided to do blog posts centering around frequently asked homeschool questions. I have been asked these questions or seen them in various online spaces. In many homeschool groups in the online space, parents are concerned about Socialization. UH! This is like nails to the chalkboard, adding nauseum, etc. Socialization is just a horrible, nasty, and vial term amongst the homeschool community. I have addressed it before in a blog post titled We are Planty Socialized (I Promise)!

But seriously! Stop! Just stop asking about it and stop worrying about it. It is not as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be. Now, if I hold my family up in a bunker and shut out all society, by all means, come after me. Let me turn it back on the naysayers. How often are public school kiddos chastised for taking too much, or are they too busy socializing? While not every school platform does this, enough do! There seems to be criticism from both sides. So, stop worrying about it.

Socialization is what you make it. My girls are way more social than I am, but they also like to have quiet time to themselves. They love to go to youth groups and play sports. Still, after several days of being around many peers their age, they often crave time to hunker down with a good book and hibernate for the day. For parents, it is all about balance and providing them with opportunities to socialize. That doesn’t always mean Socialization has to happen with peers their age. Socializing with anyone of any age is suitable for everyone, not just kids. We have to provide the opportunities.
